The GD install needs a few files from the xbase40.tgz archive, which won't be installed on systems where X isn't installed. Download xbase40.tgz somewhere (we assume /tmp), and then: cd / tar xzvf /tmp/xbase40.tgz ./usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.a \ ./usr/X11R6/lib/libfreetype.so.13.1 \ ./usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.a \ ./usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.so.3.0 rm /tmp/xbase40.tgz Now GD will install with pkg_add. |

A very interesting new O'Reilly book is just about to hit the shelves. Beautiful Code: Leading Programmers Explain How They Think contains 33 chapters by many truly great hackers, sharing their thoughts as they walk through the design and implementation of code they consider beautiful. The latest in the unending line of expensive, top-down, bureaucratic, feel-good (and basically useless) ideas to get "India Shining" is the idea of buying, with public funds, a million of Nicholas Negroponte's $100 PCs (which will actually cost $170 each, or more). How do I count the ways in which this idea is braindead? |

I've become quite a fan of Apple's Mail.app over the last few years, but the need for better OpenPGP support and more flexible templating options moved me to try Thunderbird again recently. The last time I tried using Thunderbird (a year or more ago, on a Linux machine at the time) it was quite a buggy beta. The UI would freeze while it tried to connect to the mail server, and was generally a nightmare responsewise. Anyway, I decided to check it out again. Installing the latest Thunderbird release on OS X was a breeze, and I immediately got to work using it to clear out my ToDo queue. After a bit of Real Workâ˘, I had the inevitable urge to kill some time by compiling an at-first-sight pros and cons list for Thunderbird. So here goes... |
